The origins of the company Bacalao Eguino go back to the year 1939. At that time the youngest, Juanito Eguino, began with a small winery, from which wine and cod were sent. Later, when he married Dolores Ruiz, they founded the grocery store Eguino on the street Coscojales de Portugalete, at a time when cod had already become the trademark of their business. In 1975, the Eguino family decided to expand its cod business and opened another store on central Carlos VII Square.
Bilbao is known for its gastronomy, the most typical of which is undoubtedly cod, and recipes such as "bacalao al pilpil" or "bacalao a la vizcaína" are now being cooked all over the world. As you would expect, Bacalao Eguino works exclusively with this type of cod, which is imported directly from Iceland and the Faroe Islands. A cod that lives in the cold waters of the North Atlantic, the most ecological and diverse of the seas of our planet.
This fish is able to lay up to 7 million eggs and become up to 20 years old.
